Why a Toothache Can Worsen at Night

Below are reasons why tooth pain gets more severe at night and how to deal with the pain:
Increased blood flow
Sleeping position is one major reason for intensified toothaches at night. Lying down causes increased blood flow to the head, putting more pressure on sensitive areas, including the mouth. The reason people do not feel the same aching sensation as much during daytime is that they are usually sitting or standing.
Fewer distractions
During the night, there are lesser distractions, so people are more mindful of the feelings in their bodies, including the toothache. The brain is not able to focus on many things at a time. Sometimes it seems that the toothache has worsened, but it is likely that the problem has not.
Late night meals
After eating sweets for dinner or a sugary midnight snack, some food particles may get stuck between the teeth and gums. Since the bacterial plaque in the mouth lives on sugar, their activity can cause irritation. Forgetting to clean the mouth after a late-night meal can worsen a toothache.

Reducing toothaches at night

Avoid eating sugary, acidic or cold food before bedtime. This act can worsen cavities that have developed on the teeth. After brushing, one can rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash or saltwater. They have antibacterial elements to reduce inflammation caused by plaque deposits and cavities.
In the case of mild to moderate tooth pain, using over-the-counter pain medications can help. Remember to use the medications according to instructions. Medicated ointments with numbing agents can also provide temporary respite.
Applying a pack of ice on the affected area can also be helpful. Cold compress constricts blood vessels, numbing the pain for some time.
Finally, sleeping with the head elevated may make a difference in reducing a toothache. Pillows can prop the head and reduce blood flow. This may provide some relief until sleep comes.
